Nonabelian gerbes, their geometry and stringy applications

Abstract:

String structures, that appear in string theory as spin-C structures on the loop space of the 10-dimensional space-time, can be also understood as String group principal bundles on space-time itself. In this talk we introduce a model for the string group and relate its principal bundles to nonabelian gerbes. We discuss the classification of nonabelian gerbes, and, time permitting, their relevance in the study and resolution of global anomalies of multiple coinciding M5-branes.
